Dental Crowns Have Many Uses

If a tooth is too damaged to be treated with a filling, we may recommend that a dental crown be fitted to restore and preserve the tooth. A dental crown is a cap that fits right over the tooth to replace any lost structure of the tooth and restore functionality. The best candidates for dental crowns are people who have experienced serious tooth damage or decay.

There are several situations where a dental crown is the most effective treatment:

  • Protecting teeth worn by teeth grinding or dental erosion

  • Strengthening a tooth after root canal treatment

  • Restoring dental implants

  • Protecting cracked or fractured teeth

Crowns are often referred to as "caps" because of the way that they surround your tooth to strengthen and protect it from further damage. Since a crown hides the visible portion of your tooth, they can also be used to cover certain cosmetic flaws, like severely stained teeth that can’t be whitened with professional treatments.

We have several materials to choose from when creating your customized dental crown. These include gold, porcelain on metal, and all porcelain, which are the most popular. Each of these has its own advantages, and we’ll explain your options and help you choose the material that fits your dental needs.

Fixed Bridges for Tooth Replacement

Missing teeth look unattractive, undermine your self-confidence, and make chewing and speaking a problem. However, a dental bridge restores function, improves your appearance, and is also good for your oral health.

We often use dental bridges in the following ways:

  • Fill the space left by a missing tooth

  • Prevent surrounding teeth from shifting out of place

  • Provide a permanent alternative to a removable partial denture

A properly designed dental bridge is securely attached to neighboring teeth and is very stable. In certain cases it may be beneficial to use dental implants to add stability.
